Staining the Deck and Fence

The nice weather has finally arrived!

The snow shovels are in their place and now your thoughts and eyes are looking outside. You may have noticed that your deck and fence are looking drab and weather beaten. Staining these wooden things will give them the refresh they need as well as lengthen their lifespan.

You can check the wood you’re thinking of staining by putting a little water on it.

If the water beads up, leave it for now but if the water absorbs into to the wood…go for it!

When you decide that you would like to stain your deck and fence, take a look at the upcoming weather forecast. The temperature should be 10 to 26 degrees Celsius for a few days with no rain forecast for at least 48 hours. Try not to do the work in the direct sunlight. It’s also a good idea not to stain on a humid day. The stain won’t dry evenly and will take longer to dry.

Next, get the wood ready for staining. Give the wood a power wash and scrub away any strains. You may have to take the time to sand the surface. You really want to apply the stain on an even surface. If need be, use wood filler to take care of any repairs. You may have to replace a board or two at this time. Now you can head out to your local hardware store and purchase the stain.

The time to do the actual staining has arrived. Make sure you’ve put a couple of days aside to do the work and another couple of days for the stain to dry properly. Use a brush to stain the slats and a roller for the bigger parts. Let the stain dry, then apply a second coat if needed. Most do one coat on the first day then the second coat the next day. If your deck and fence are quite new, one coat will be fine. Make sure you do the water test so you won’t waste time and money.
