Answer: Too many!
Whether it’s appliances, insulation, window-replacement (and we haven’t even mentioned Feng Shui yet). Maybe fencing doesn’t seem like it belongs in the top five concerns. But there are several reasons that, aesthetically and functionally, make it a worthwhile investment.
Good Fences DO make good neighbors – Poet Robert Frost was right. Even contemporary counselors are wont to emphasize the need for individuals to feel comfortable in laying out their ‘boundaries’. A fence is a statement that you value your privacy and your property. It’s also a physical deterrent to any trespassing or potential damage to that property. There’s no need to give off the appearance of a military installation; it could be the classic white-picket-fence, ornate iron, vinyl, or whatever you prefer. But, just as with the ‘broken windows’ theory that turned around New York’s Times Square, the unspoken statement that you are taking an active interest in maintaining your yard. That’s a strong and positive unspoken statement, to your neighbors, and any potential trespasser. You’re also cutting down on homeowner liability if someone were to stray on to your property and have a mishap. (And don’t forget reducing the irritation of neighbor’s pets paying an unwelcome visit to your front or back yard.)
Of COURSE, you want it to look nice – And why not? Now that we’ve covered the ‘fear factor’ of borders and protections, let’s focus on you owning as beautiful a yard as possible. Not only does a fence act as a ‘picture frame’ for your front and back, but you can also incorporate it into becoming an active part of your garden, whether through supporting lattices, plant hooks, bird feeders, or even some art. (And at the same time, providing maximum protection for the beauty in your yard.) As the homeowner, you’re the one who amassed some potentially serious debt. So why should you not maximize the pleasure you derive from that investment? Appreciate your OWN curb appeal.
Your Yard IS Your Yard – Speaking of enjoying your own property, one of the major appeals of owning a home is that you have truly defined your borders. And that certainly includes visual borders. There are limits as far as fence-heights, but privacy is an invaluable treat (incorporating some trees or shrubs is always a great way to maximize the seclusion, and something to keep in mind when choosing a fence).
Add to Your Property’s Value – When it’s time for you to move on, all of the previous reasons for a quality fence will also appeal to the next prospective owner. Whether it’s the improved appearance, privacy, or added safety and security for you, your children, and pets…you are providing a lot of conscious (and subconscious) tick-marks to the next buyer. Keep in mind that they likely have no idea about the area or the immediate neighbors. Added peace of mind is never a negative thing.
Knowing where to draw the line (as in, boundary) – It might seem mundane, but it is crucial to be aware of your property line, and your neighbor’s. Knowing your Boundaries isn’t just a good psychological pattern, it is essential in owning your own home. Just because you may be on good terms with your current neighbors, arguments over a few inches of a property line can turn into a minefield with the wrong personalities living just one door over. Did we mention the value of ‘Peace of Mind’? That is perhaps the best example yet.
